EU DORA Enters Into Force
The Digital Operational Resilience Act became applicable on January 17, 2025, requiring financial institutions to manage AI/ICT risks.
EU AI Act Enters Full Application Phase
Core provisions of the EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) become fully applicable on August 2, 2026. High-risk AI systems must now comply with conformity assessment requirements, and general-purpose AI models must meet transparency obligations. The prohibition on unacceptable-risk AI practices has been in force since February 2, 2025.
Canada's AIDA Dies as Parliament Prorogued
Bill C-27, which included the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), died on January 6, 2025, when Prime Minister Trudeau prorogued Parliament. Canada currently has no dedicated federal AI legislation. A new AI bill may be introduced in the next Parliamentary session.
California AI Transparency Act Effective Date Delayed to August 2026
AB 853 delayed the effective date of California's AI Transparency Act (SB 942) from January 1, 2026, to August 2, 2026. This gives generative AI developers additional time to implement content detection tools and watermarking requirements.
